Real hammer! Apple executives revealed that the AR headset will be released in 2022 and AR glasses will be launched in 2023
Although it was previously reported that Apple plans to release an augmented reality headset as early as 2020, a new report suggests that such a headset may be a few years away. According to The Information, Apple's current goal is to release an augmented reality headset in 2022 and then "more stylish" augmented reality glasses by 2023. Mike Rockwell, Apple's vice president in charge of AR and virtual reality (VR) projects, shared the timeline with at least 1,000 Apple Park employees during an internal presentation in October, the report said. Apple's AR headset, codenamed N301, features augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) capabilities, using an external camera to map the user's surroundings, with a sleeker design, and said Apple wants to focus on lightweight fabrics and materials to ensure its headset can be worn comfortably for long periods of time, the report said. The AR headset has a high-resolution display and camera that allows users to "read small text" and "see other people standing in front of and behind virtual objects," the report said. Apple executives allegedly said the technology will be able to map the surface, edges, and dimensions of a room with greater accuracy than existing devices on the market. "To illustrate these features, at the October conference, Apple showed attendees a video demonstration of placing a virtual coffee maker on a real kitchen table with people surrounding the room," the report said. The virtual coffee machine obscures the person standing at the back of the room. The company plans to reach out to third-party software developers as early as 2021 to encourage them to build apps for the device, so the headset could be available in preview by 2022, the aforementioned Apple executive said. Following Apple's AR headset, it also plans to release a smaller pair of AR glasses, codenamed N421. Unlike headsets, AR glasses are designed to be worn for long periods of time. "The prototype seen looks like overpriced sunglasses with thick frames that hold batteries and chips", according to a person familiar with the matter. Apple CEO Tim Cook has previously said he sees augmented reality as "a big idea, just like a smartphone." According to The Information, Apple's senior executives said they believe the device will replace the iPhone in about a decade. Article source: Internet typesetting: optometrist talent network
