Qualcomm and Pok茅mon GO developers have partnered to develop 5G-enabled AR glasses
On December 9, according to foreign media reports, chip manufacturer Qualcomm is cooperating with Pok茅mon GO developer Niantic to develop AR (augmented reality) glasses that support 5G. Phil Keslin, chief technology officer of Niantic, Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 concept glasses, said they would work with Qualcomm on the project for many years. Qualcomm last week unveiled the 5G-enabled XR2, a new chipset platform designed specifically to power augmented and virtual reality devices. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon XR2 platform has achieved significant performance improvements compared to the XR platform, including 2x CPU and GPU performance improvements, 4x video bandwidth improvements, 6x resolution improvements, and 11x AI performance improvements. The Snapdragon XR2 platform is the world's first XR platform to support seven parallel cameras with a dedicated processor for computer vision. On top of the basic AI and optional 5G connectivity support, the Snapdragon XR2 platform has been custom-optimized for visual, interactive, and audio technologies. Qualcomm also mentioned that several OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are already planning to launch commercial devices powered by the Snapdragon XR2 platform, and other customers are in different stages of prototyping and evaluation. Niantic spun off from Google in August 2015 to become an independent game company with an investment from NetEase. Pok茅mon GO developed by Niantic has previously become a global hit. It is an augmented reality mobile game based on location services, licensed by Nintendo and The Pok茅mon Company, and developed and operated by Niantic. The game allows players to use the real world as a platform to capture, fight, train, and trade virtual monsters called "Pok茅mon".
